The MEP has addressed the President of Lithuania.

MEP from Lithuania and chairman of the Movement against Astravets NPP Petras Auštravičius appealed to Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda with a request to reject the draft agreement on partnership priorities between the EU and Belarus, which is to be considered in the EU Council in June, the Charter97.org correspondent reports from Vilnius.

"No agreements with Belarus, until Lukashenka starts talking seriously and fundamentally about the fate of the Astravets NPP, rather than about the illusory security checks, which do not reflect the most important violation that has already occurred - the choice of the place," - Austravičius stated. The politician added that Lithuania should strive for solidarity of the whole EU on this issue.

"If the EU had unanimously decided not to buy electricity from the Astravets NPP, then Lukashenka and the Kremlin would certainly not be able to build the second, third and fourth units. Let's not forget that this is still planned," - Austravičius added.

The Lithuanian MEP criticized the approach, requiring the Astravets NPP to pass stress tests, calling it "cosmetic repairs".

"Lithuania can always block current instruments of partnership with the EU for Lukashenka, directly linking all cooperation with the safety issue of the Astravets NPP. But not by ensuring "cosmetic repairs" - the negotiations should be based on stopping the construction of new power units and an embargo on electricity purchases, not on illusory safety improvement through passing stress tests," - Auštravičius stressed.

Lithuania has repeatedly criticized Belarus for building the unsafe Astravets NPP in close proximity to the Lithuanian border. The first congress of the Movement against Astravets NPP was held in Vilnius in February.
