EU Promises 'Firm Approach' To Regime In Belarus In 2022

Josep Borrell summed up the results of the outgoing year.

Head of EU diplomacy Josep Borrell, summing up the results of 2021, spoke about the EU's position on Belarus.

“In our eastern neighborhood, 2021 was marked by examples of power politics, as we saw in the cases of Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova. To counter these threats, the EU provides firm and united political and operational support to its partners, for example, with the help of the 5th package of sanctions against the Lukashenka regime in Belarus,” he wrote on his blog.

According to him, “as hybrid conflicts spread, the EU should [...] maintain a firm approach to Belarus”.

“In this regard, the Eastern Partnership Summit has confirmed the strategic, ambitious and far-sighted approach of the EU to our Eastern European partners,” the head of diplomacy said.

Major success in 2021

Earlier, Borrell, speaking on December 13 at a press conference following a meeting in Brussels of EU foreign ministers, called the stopping the flow of migrants from Belarus to the EU “a major success of European diplomacy” in 2021.

“We managed to stop the flows of migrants to Belarus, and from Belarus to the EU ... Lukashenka failed to achieve his goals. He's in trouble today. We have done a good job together with the European Foreign Service,” he said.
