Ex-Head Of Sociology Institute At National Academy Of Sciences: White-Red-White Flag Becoming All-National

The future belongs to the historical flag.

Former head of the Sociology Institute at the National Academy of Sciences Henadz Korshunau is convinced that certain re-coding of symbols took place in the result of the events of the year 2020. Formally, the red-green flag is the official state flag. “If earlier, most regarded the red-green flag neutrally, now it has become the symbol of violence, the symbol of paddy wagons,” Korshunau underlines in an interview to Deutsche Welle.

Meanwhile, the white-red-white flag is becoming a national symbol, according to him. “This flag was a symbol of national revival, and now it is perceived precisely the same”.

Henadz Korshunau is sure that the future belongs to the historical flag. “It is not the flags that tear the society apart. It is not the flags that bring it back together. However, thinking long-term, it’s rather the white-red-white flag that can unite. Because the messages of the white-red-white flag are much more positive, of course,” he believes.

The Minsk sociologist thinks that there is no split in the Belarusian society, but there is “a very small group of people who stand against the protests, and support the government”.
