EU Intends to Ban Transit and Import of Fertilizers from Belarus as Part of Sanctions

The sanctions will be approved at a meeting of the European Council and officially published in a few days.

The sanctions that the European Union is preparing against Belarus, among other things, imply a ban on the supply of Belarusian fertilizers to the EU countries, as well as a ban on their export through the territory of the EU member states, BNS reports.

Discussions on possible sanctions are ongoing in the European Union and should end on Thursday, two sources said.

According to them, the upcoming package of sanctions was approved by the EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday. The package covers seven sectors of the economy, including trade in Belarusian fertilizers.

“If approved, fertilizer transit through the EU and imports to EU countries will stop,” one source told BNS.

One of the world's largest fertilizer producers, Belaruskali, operates in Belarus. The company exports its products through the port of Klaipeda (Lithuania), using the services of the Lithuanian railways. The Biriu kroviniu terminalas terminal transports Belaruskali fertilizers in Klaipeda.

The EU is going to impose sectoral sanctions against Belarus after the incident with the seizure of a Ryanair plane flying from Athens to Vilnius in the Belarusian capital and the arrest of Raman Pratasevich in May.

Sector sanctions for Belarus will be discussed by the heads of the EU countries on Thursday. Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda intends to support the EU agreement on these sanctions, whatever it may be.
