There is an influx of illegal immigrants on the Belarusian-Latvian border.
On the night of Tuesday, August 10, 65 illegal migrants have been detained on the Latvian-Belarusian border. During the last day, about 200 migrants were detained. This, as writes Delfi.lv, told the head of the Latvian Border Guard Guntis Pujāts.
According to him, the number of illegal immigrants, crossing the Latvian-Belarusian border, has increased sharply since August 6.
Migrants from Belarus arrive in large groups, which, according to the official, indicates their organization. Several times refugees crossed the border in groups of 30 or more.
Many migrants do not know that they have arrived in Latvia; they thought they would go straight to Germany. Among them are not only men of working age, but also women and children.
Pujāts also notes that the accommodation centres are almost crowded. It means the trespassers will have to stay in tents.
Given the situation in Lithuania and the increased risks on the Latvian-Belarusian border, the Latvian authorities have introduced enhanced border surveillance and mobilised the resources of the State Border Guard and the army to protect the border. The European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex is also providing support.
On Tuesday, the Latvian government will consider an emergency in the border area near the Latvian-Belarusian border. If the Cabinet of Ministers declares a state of emergency in parts of the Augsdaugava and Krāslava regions, border guards will have additional powers to curb illegal migration and expel border crossers.
