Congratulate Belarusian Journalist Iryna Leushyna On Her Birthday

The Director of BelaPAN will celebrate her 57th anniversary behind bars.

Iryna Leushyna is a Belarusian journalist, director of the BelaPAN news agency.

Iryna was detained on August 18, 2021. She was accused under Part 1 of Article 361-1 of the Criminal Code (Creation and management of an extremist formation). At the same time, the authorities recognized the BelaPAN as an extremist group only three months after her detention, according to the Human Rights Center Viasna.

Now Iryna faces up to 7 years in prison. The trial in the “BelaPAN case” began on June 6 and lasted exactly four months. The Minsk Regional Court sentenced the journalist to 4 years in prison on October 6.
