Uprising Of Dignity Took Place In Belarus 12 Years Ago

Today is the anniversary of the Belarusian Square.

On December 19, 2010, the so-called presidential elections were held in Belarus. Tens of thousands of people protested against the falsification of the election results after the polls closed.

It became the most massive protest action in Belarus in recent years. Andrei Sannikov, the leader of the European Belarus Civil Campaign, was then called the strongest presidential candidate of Belarus from the opposition. According to independent observers, he was supposed to enter the second round together with Lukashenka. But the peaceful protest was brutally suppressed by the police and militarized police forces.

Later on, Editor-in-Chief of the Charter97.org website Natallia Radzina assessed the events of December 19, 2010, as follows: “Ukrainians call the Euromaidan the Revolution of Dignity. In 2010, we also had the Uprising of Dignity. The people who took to the streets then started respecting themselves, and made the whole world respect the Belarusian people.”
