Christo Grozev: Unusual Information Leak Indicated Couple Of Days Before Makei's Death

Bellingcat will investigate the sudden death of the minister.

Investigative journalist Christo Grozev said on the air of the Popular Politics show that Bellingcat would look into the sudden death of 64-year-old Belarusian Foreign Minister Uladzimir Makei.

Grozev says that there is no objective data yet to draw any conclusions. However, the analysis of the situation requires a detailed investigation. According to Grozev, there are "several strange coincidences".

A couple of days before Makei's death, there was "not a very usual information leak" that either an assassination attempt or a warning signal was being prepared against Lukashenka. Leak platforms gave not "very clear" information. And in less than two days, Makei died. “What happened can be assessed as a signal against Lukashenka.”

Makei "was the representative of the party of peace with the West."

"He was not too old and definitely not sick."

Based on this, Bellingcat will proceed with its own investigation into Makei's death.

It should be noted that Makei is one of the key figures of the Lukashenka regime. In 2000-2008 he worked as an assistant to the dictator. On July 15, 2008, he was appointed head of Lukashenka's administration.

During the protests after the 2010 “elections”, it was Makei who spoke on TV about the “preparation of terrorist acts” and “militants”.

On August 20, 2012, he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He intensively lobbied for the lifting of sanctions against the Lukashenka regime. He also stated that “there are no problems of political prisoners in Belarus”.

As the Charter97.org website wrote, Makei died amid information about the upcoming replacement of Lukashenka.
