PAVEL ZHUK

The journalist passed away this morning.

Pavel Zhuk, a famous Belarusian journalist, publisher of the legendary newspapers Svaboda and Naviny, passed away this morning.

The Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) informs about it.

Pavel Zhuk was a member of the publishing group of the magazine "Literature," founded by Siarhei Dubavets and Ales Bialiatski in 1989. Then he took part in the publication of "Naviny BPF".

In March 1990, together with Dubavets and Ales Hurkou, he published the "Freedom Day - 90" devoted to the 72nd anniversary of creation of Belarusian People's Republic. "Freedom Day" became a prologue of the newspaper "Svaboda", the first issue of which was published in April 1990.

Pavel Zhuk was publishing Svaboda until November 1997, when the newspaper was closed after repeated warnings for publishing articles criticising Lukashenka's politics. In January 1998, the newspaper was revived under the name of Naviny.

Charter97.org expresses its deepest condolences to the family and friends.
