What "retaliatory sanctions" did the Prime Minister propose?
Prime Minister Raman Halouchanka threatened to cut timber exports to Lithuania. Moreover, if Vilnius “forces them to respond further”, then Minsk will restrict the import of spare parts and used clothes from there. He made the statement on the air of Belarus 1 TV Channel.
“If you look at the goods that are exported from Belarus to Lithuania, then hundreds of millions [of dollars] are woodworking. This is actually wood, which is sent to Lithuania in the form of primary processing. And there already Lithuanian wood-processing enterprises do further processing and export to the EU countries. If necessary, we will cut off this supply chain. Where will Lithuania get wood? That is the question. And where will the Lithuanian woodworkers go?" said Prime Minister Raman Halouchanka.
According to Belstat, exports of lumber industry products to Lithuania amounted to $306.7 million last year and $228 million a year earlier.
"Large quantities of spare parts and second-hand clothes are imported from Lithuania, this is all the trade business of Lithuania. We will simply refuse to import these categories. Where will they take them next? However, we do not want this. I’m just highlighting that if we are forced to respond further, we have the tools that we will use,” said Halouchanka.
