There is simply no money for them.
Direct gubernatorial elections in some Russian regions may not take place as planned in September due to "the unfolding economic situation," Kommersant reported, citing Kremlin sources.
As Russia has unleashed a full-scale war against Ukraine, imposing the most severe sanctions in history against the aggressor, its economy is sliding into the abyss with each passing day.
At the same time, elections require a lot of money, including that from the budget. In addition, an election campaign implies that candidates will make socio-economic promises, which could unlikely succeed amid Russia's current economic problems. Additionally, people are not yet very positive towards their governors because of the "empty sugar shelves", though ratings for Putin, whose actions have resulted in a food shortage, are on the rise.
There are several scenarios for these elections, including a postponement (less likely) and allowing governors to be elected by the legislative assembly (more likely).
