Chain Stores Owner: Unrest Over Lack Of Bread Began in Krychau

An emergency meeting of the executive committee was held in the city.

The owner of a chain of grocery stores, co-chairman of the Minsk Metropolitan Union of Entrepreneurs and Employers Viktar Marhelau told onliner.by that some metropolitan bakeries no longer accept bread back from stores.

“However, in general, across the country, it is not advisable to introduce a ban on the return of unsold food products by stores. This can narrow the range of goods on store shelves and cause social discontent,” Viktar Marhelau believes.

As an example, he cited the situation in Krychau.

“There was a meeting of the executive committee a couple of weeks ago and they spoke about the problem that trade organizations are trying to be extra safe and, in order to reduce possible losses, began to order less bread. As a result, it became difficult to buy bread in the evening, and this caused people's dissatisfaction,” Viktar Marhelau said.

Since bread is a socially significant product, representatives of the executive committees pay attention to the fact that this food product is always on sale, including in the evening, the owner of the food chain said.

“If we proceed from the fact that there should always be bread in stores: in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening — and in a wide assortment, then we must admit that in this case there will always be leftovers. And it is sometimes impossible to predict how much,” Viktar Marhelau emphasizes.

According to him, even weather conditions affect bread sales.

“Accordingly, if there will always be leftovers, it is necessary to make a state decision on bread. For example, shops should be allowed to sell unsold bread at reduced prices,” Viktar Marhelau summed up.
