BBC: 12 Doctors Accompanied Putin To Vladivostok

The number of medical escort has increased significantly compared to previous years.

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived at the Eastern Economic Forum accompanied by 12 doctors from the Kremlin Central Clinical Hospital (CCH). They flew to Vladivostok 10 days before the president and were quarantined in a hotel on Russky Island, BBC writes.

Every year doctors fly to Vladivostok to follow Putin, but this time the number of doctors was higher than usual. In 2021, he was accompanied by two doctors, and in 2019 and 2018 the team was eight doctors, the newspaper notes. The forum was not held in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

It was possible to track the movement of doctors thanks to the published state contracts: the Central Clinical Hospital paid 738 thousand rubles for the accommodation of 12 employees in the hotel from August 27 to September 9. Only in 2017, the Central Clinical Hospital spent more on the maintenance of doctors in Vladivostok, but then the number of doctors was not indicated in the contract. In the same year, Putin disappeared for a week a month before the forum, and did not appear in public, which could be due to an injury during a hockey match.

The quarantine requirement for employees of the presidential administration also remains in force. Officials accompanying Putin were in 10-day quarantine before the president's visit to the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum in June this year and ahead of the naval parade in July. Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, the presidential administration has already spent 1 billion rubles on quarantine for Putin.

In April, Proekt published an investigation alleging that Putin was accompanied on all his trips by a team of doctors from the Central Clinical Hospital. They also regularly fly to him in Sochi for examinations. Among the permanent members of the medical team are resuscitator Dmitry Verbovoy, otolaryngologists Alexei Shcheglov and Igor Yesakov, and surgeon Evgeny Selivanov. The last doctor specializes in oncology. He defended his thesis on the topic “Peculiarities of diagnosis and surgical treatment of elderly and senile patients with thyroid cancer”.

It is important to note in this context that in July 2020, Putin met with the head of the National Medical Research Center for Endocrinology, Ivan Dedov, and was interested in the problem of thyroid cancer. Putin began to be especially scrupulous about his health during the coronavirus period, holding meetings and consultations by video calls, and allowing visitors to come only after a two-week quarantine, which is still mandatory for all Kremlin employees.
