The day before, Erdogan held a meeting with employees of Turkish economic departments.
Details on the development of a payment system that should become an alternative to the Russian Mir cards will be announced in a day or two. This is reported by the Turkish publication Aydinlik, citing sources. According to the channel, Turkish state-owned banks, following private ones, have already abandoned the use of the Russian payment system. Thus, there are no banks in Turkey that accept Mir cards.
“Recently, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a meeting with employees of economic departments regarding the Mir cards. After the meeting, it became known that the work continues. According to information received by Aydinlik, details of the payment system being worked on as an alternative to Mir will be announced in a day or two,” the publication writes.
Earlier, the NTV channel reported that Turkish state-owned banks abandoned the Mir system, following private credit organizations. In mid-September, the United States announced the imposition of sanctions against countries that conduct transactions with the Russian payment system. Because of this, two Turkish banks, Is Bankasi and DenizBank, have suspended card service.
However, state-owned banks Ziraat Bank, Vakifbank and Halkbank continued to work with them. On the eve, the media wrote that Mir card holders began to encounter problems when trying to withdraw money from these banks. On September 23, Mr. Erdogan gave instructions to develop alternatives to the Russian payment system.
