The AFU will receive vehicles with one unique feature.
Ukraine will receive Abrams M1A2 tanks from the US, which are an upgrade of the older M1A1. Unlike the A1 modification, which runs on an analogue system, the A2 runs on a digital system.
The transfer of these tanks to Ukraine was also commented to CNN by retired Army General Robert Abrams, former commander of US forces in Korea. It was after his father that the American Abrams tank was named. According to him, the difference between these modifications is "like the difference between a dial-up corded phone and the iPhone you're holding in your hands".
He noted that a feature of this model of the Abrams tank is a new inter-vehicle information system. It allows vehicles to exchange information continuously and automatically. Using this technology, commanders can quickly track the location of tanks, identify enemy positions and handle artillery requests.
In addition, the improved version of this tank is also significantly more lethal than the A1.
"The M1A2 is far superior in lethality, survivability and mobility to anything Russia has on the battlefield," General Abrams stressed.
Providing Abrams Tanks to Ukraine
On January 25, 2023, US President Joe Biden officially announced the delivery of 31 M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine. One tank battalion will be formed from them. The delivery of the tanks will take several months.
At the same time, former CIA chief and former commander of the US and NATO forces in Afghanistan David Petraeus believes that it is time for the Kremlin to start worrying about the delivery of US Abrams tanks to Ukraine, as this was a very important decision. He stressed that Ukraine would now be receiving modern Western armaments, including tanks. And these weapons are superior to the old Soviet models.
