One of the first targets of Hamas terrorists on 7 October was the Mahane Re'im military base, the headquarters of the Israeli army's Gaza Division.
The militants managed to enter the base. There was a danger that they would reach the compound with the wives and children of the soldiers. They had come to visit the division's headquarters for a holiday, Details wrote.
The division is now conducting an investigation to reconstruct the events of that day. The investigation has revealed the story of a young Bedouin tracker and his fellow soldiers.
An officer in the tracking unit, Lieutenant Colonel M., decided to deceive the terrorists. One of the young Bedouin trackers, known for his courage and professionalism, took off his military uniform and addressed the terrorists in Arabic. The fighter pretended to be one of the terrorists.
"Over here, come on!" he shouted during the firefight. The deception worked, the terrorists thought he was one of them, came out of hiding and approached the terrorist. At that moment, Lieutenant Colonel M. opened fire on them, killing several.
"He saved many lives," concluded the officers who are investigating the events of 7 October.
They also praised the actions of the Bedouin Desert Patrol Battalion (585th Siyur Midbari Battalion).
The battalion attacked the terrorists with great courage. "They engaged in hand-to-hand combat and suffered casualties. I was struck by the number of reservists who were recruited [after the attack]. They came to save their friends in the battalion," said one officer. These days, soldiers from the Desert Patrol Battalion are securing the Kerem Shalom checkpoint, which is closed until further notice, and the settlements in the area.
The Gaza Division continues to investigate the events of 7 October. The investigation is headed by General Avi Rosenfeld.
