Satellite images showed the real scale of the failure of the Russian offensive.
Russian hardware losses near Avdiivka exceeded their losses during the failed crossing of the Seversky Donets in May 2022.
The Russian occupiers lost from 109 to 200 pieces of hardware in the battles for Avdiivka in Donetsk region between October 10 and 20. Such data was released by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), based on satellite images released by a Ukrainian reserve officer.
It is noted that the majority of Russian losses are primarily armoured combat vehicles such as BMP-1 and BMP-2 and MT-LB; T-72, T-64, T-80 tanks; BTR armoured personnel carriers and other vehicles.
The Ukrainian officer who published the images also said that Russian hardware losses around Avdiivka exceeded their losses during the failed crossing of the Seversky Donets in May 2022 and will likely exceed those around Vuhledar between November 2022 and April 2023.
That said, the numbers may increase - about a dozen vehicles are not included in the list of losses due to inconsistencies in images.
Two other independent sources estimate that Russian forces have lost about 200 military vehicles near Avdiivka.
The ISW report said that Russian sources say Russian forces are in control of the Avdiivka region. A Ukrainian military observer also pointed this out. However, the head of the Avdiivka town military administration, Vitaliy Barabash, denied these statements and clarified that it was a disputed "grey zone".
