These arrests could be politically motivated.
25 Latvian citizens have been detained in Belarus recently, according to Latvian Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš’s statement on TV3.
According to the Foreign Minister, there are suspicions that these arrests are politically motivated. He stated that Latvia cannot help those detained due to the lack of diplomatic relations with Belarus.
The head of the Latvian Foreign Ministry calls on Latvian citizens not to travel to Belarus.
“We are not able to help at the level of state-to-state relations. If you are travelling to Belarus, we cannot help you. Now we don’t have diplomatic relations there and cannot influence it anyhow. So we won’t be able to [help],” Minister Kariņš said.
He added that Latvian society is accustomed to the rule of law and fair trials, but this is not the case in Belarus.
