Belaruskali Took Offense To Lithuania

It’s suing for sanctions.

Belaruskali filed an arbitration lawsuit against Lithuania for refusing to transport fertilizers. The Belarusian company issued an invoice for one billion euros, according to the Lithuanian TV3 channel.

The Lithuanian Ministry of Transport and Communications confirmed the information about the trial, but they refused to comment so as not to harm the state’s position in court.

According to preliminary data, Belaruskali claims Lithuania violated a Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement signed in 1999. The applicant has two claims: termination of the agreement on rail transportation of fertilisers to the Klaipeda sea port, as well as a decrease in the value of shares of Belaruskali and the bulk cargo terminal in Klaipeda (the value of the shares decreased as a result of sanctions against the Belarusian company).

Lithuania terminated the agreement on the transportation of Belarusian potash fertilizers due to national security concerns. Transportation ceased in February 2022.

Previously, Belaruskali had already sued the Lithuanian authorities, but to no avail.
