Defense Express: Ukrainian Forces Unprecedently Defeated Russian Corvette Askold

The attack was the first of its kind in the world.

The Ukrainian forces, having struck the port and maritime infrastructure of the Zaliv plant in the city of Kerch, temporarily occupied Crimea, on November 4, significantly damaged the enemy missile corvette Askold. This attack was unique in history.

Defense Express reported.

An analysis of footage of damage to the Project 22800 Karakurt vessel, which is publicly available now, shows that the Russians will have to rebuild the ship from scratch.

Defense Express says that after a missile attack using SCALP-EG, the corvette suffered “very critical damages to very important parts”.

“And so Ukraine at the same time became the first in history to destroy an enemy missile ship that had not yet left the factory and had not been commissioned into its fleet,” the article reads.

The central part of the ship’s hull was blasted. There are 8 vertical cruise missile launchers for the Caliber and/or P-800 Oniks missiles. Thus, the ship's main weapon system was destroyed.

“Moreover, judging by the nature of the external damage, most likely the Russians will have destructed most (if not all) of the on-board ship controlling equipment on the deck-bridge,” the article reads.

It is also noted that since the diesel engines on the Karakurt-class corvettes are located in the midsection, it is very doubtful that the vessel’s power plant will retain functionality.

The Russians planned that the Askold missile corvette would join the Black Sea Fleet in December this year. Instead, they may have to announce their intention to rebuild the ship.

“But here the enemy will have to rebuild the craft from scratch, since with the damaged power plant, on-board control equipment and main weapons system, this damaged ship is just a collection of scrap metal,” the article reads.

Let us remind you that on November 4, explosions rocked the temporarily occupied city of Kerch in Crimea. Then the Russians were talking about air defense sounds.

Later, the Department of Strategic Communications of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that the Ukrainian military had hit the Zaliv shipyard in Crimea.

It also became known that the Kalibr carrier was damaged as a result of the attack.

Earlier, the Office of Strategic Communications of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine showed the pictures. The footage showed that the Defence Forces caused significant damage to the enemy ship Askold.
