Why?
The mayor of Druskininkai, Richardas Malinauskas, said on 8 November that the decision to build an artificial sea had already been taken. It will literally appear on the border with Belarus, but not as another barrier for illegal migrants.
"The sea will appear in Druskininkai! Clear and sunny sky, +30, sand dunes, palm trees, surfers on two-metre waves, a group of people having fun on the terrace at the bar, holidaymakers reading books on deckchairs - this is not a picture from a trip. This is the future for Druskininkai residents and visitors, the sea under a roof with a surfing pool, the project of which I discussed yesterday with experts from White Water West," the Lithuanian politician could not contain his enthusiasm.
According to him, the meeting was attended by the head of the company, Anthony Marinaki, who came from Canada, and the managing director, Sirko Adler, from Germany. The company's representative in Poland and the Baltic States, Anna Wojdala, was also present at the meeting, which should testify to the seriousness of the investors' intentions.
The mayor of Druskininkai promised that three years after the start of construction, the city will have a "unique aquatic centre", together with an entertainment centre with swimming pools, recreational oases, playgrounds, climbing walls, beach, sea and Europe's only surfing pool under one roof, Lithuanian TV channel LRT reported.

Today, Druskininkai is known as a resort town in the south of Lithuania, almost on the border with Belarus (Privalka border crossing). Situated on the right bank of the Neman River, it is also a popular destination for Belarusians.
