Understanding the war in Ukraine a year on.
The grouping of Russian troops, which launched an invasion of Ukraine almost a year ago, has been almost completely destroyed.
About 150 thousand people either died or were seriously wounded, and are no longer compatible with the further ability to conduct hostilities.
The catastrophic losses of the Russians forced Putin to assemble a new army, which is much worse armed and prepared.
The influential American publication Foreign Policy writes about this, citing Ukrainian and Western officials.
“A group of 150 thousand people who stood on the border with Ukraine on February 24, 2022, was de facto almost completely destroyed. According to American intelligence, by the beginning of February-2023, Russian losses in killed and wounded reached almost 200 thousand people,” the journalists say.
Putin was forced to gather the mobilized potential of ordinary Russians. By mid-February 2023, the number of Russian forces on the territory of Ukraine exceeded 300 thousand people.
After the replenishment with mobilized men, although poorly trained and poorly equipped, the size of the army is already almost twice the size that the Kremlin mustered for the invasion last February.
Moreover, Russian generals “spend” this 300,000-strong army according to the textbooks of World War II: mobilized and assembled prisoners from the colonies are sent to “attacks in human waves” under the fire of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, says Dara Massikot, an analyst at Rand Corporation.
The tactics of the Red Army from the 1940s, when the enemy is literally bombarded with corpses, although not the most advanced, bring certain effect, and the Ukrainian army also has to suffer losses, journalists say.
