Boomerang For Lukashenka

There were enough similar examples in the European history of other dictators.

Lukashenka, who has recently made a number of harsh statements against Ukraine, signed the law on the death penalty for officials and military of the Republic of Belarus for high treason.

From my point of view, such a step has several aspects.

First, it should be recalled that Lukashenka is not a legitimate president. It was not recognized by a significant part of the European, world community. Therefore, his decision has limited impact. Although the legislation of Belarus under the current regime will apply capital punishment, there is no doubt about it.

Secondly, the death penalty in Belarus was used before. That is why the republic is no longer a member of the Council of Europe.

Thirdly, I do not see a direct connection between Belarusian-Ukrainian relations and the introduction of the death penalty for treason in Belarus. It is rather Lukashenka's desire to drive the entire establishment under one hand. So that all of them sit like mice under a broom, and do not move in any way.

It is also important to understand that even the first case of applying this new norm of legislation — the execution of a person for treason — can turn into a boomerang for Lukashenka himself and someone from his entourage.
