European Parliament Calls On Court In The Hague To Start Trial Against Lukashenka

A resolution has been adopted.

On March 15, at a plenary session in Strasbourg, the European Parliament adopted a resolution on “The further repressions against the people of Belarus,” by a majority of votes, a correspondent of the Charter97.org website reports.

The members of the European Parliament condemned numerous violations of human rights in Belarus, ongoing repressions, and the adoption of new repressive laws.

Separately, the case of a political prisoner, European Belarus activist Palina Sharenda-Panasyuk is mentioned: tightening of the detention regime, arbitrary extension of the term of imprisonment, violation of the right to correspondence, deprivation of family visits.

The MEPs are focusing on the sentences handed down to journalist Andrzej Poczobut, as well as Nobel Peace Prize winner Ales Bialiatski and his colleagues at the human rights center Viasna. The European Parliament calls for their immediate release with all charges dropped and compensation paid.

The European Parliament strongly condemns “the involvement of Belarus in an unjustified unprovoked Russian aggressive war against Ukraine”, “expresses its support for the Belarusian volunteers and partisans fighting for the independence of Belarus and helping Ukraine”, “recognizes that the Lukashenka regime is an accomplice of state sponsoring of terrorism and an accomplice of the state using terrorist means.”

Members of the European Parliament “note with concern the ongoing so-called integration of Russia and Belarus in a number of areas, which is tantamount to occupation, and, in particular, the growing militarization of Belarus”.

The European Parliament calls for strengthening and expanding sanctions against individuals and legal entities involved in repressions, to take measures to prevent circumvention of EU sanctions against Russia (introduce the same restrictive measures against the Lukashenka regime as against Russia), as well as to impose sanctions on the export of potash fertilizers.

Parliamentarians call on EU Member States to actively apply the principle of universal jurisdiction and prepare legal actions against Belarusian officials, including Lukashenka, who are responsible for or involved in systematic violence and repression and crimes against humanity.”

The MEPs call on the International Criminal Court to “initiate pre-trial proceedings against the Belarusian regime in cases of crimes against humanity”.
