Lithuania Limits Belarusian Traffic At Two Checkpoints

Restrictions may be introduced at the end of this year.

Lithuania plans to restrict entry at two checkpoints on the border with Belarus due to the fact that there are no X-ray machines to search for contraband. Border crossings will work only for passenger cars during the daytime. The head of the Lithuanian Customs Department Darius Žvironas made a statement, according to Delfi.

We are talking about the checkpoints "Tverečius" and "Šumsko" on the border with Belarus (twin checkpoints - "Vidzy" and "Losha"). Since they are not equipped with X-ray machines, cigarette smuggling hidden in empty trucks passes unhindered, Darius Žvironas explained.

According to him, after the reconstruction of the border crossing "Medininkai" both "problem checkpoints" will accept only cars during the daytime.

“This will help prevent both corruption and smuggling,” said the head of the department.

He recalled that other major border checkpoints operate 24 hours a day.

“If it’s really necessary at night, people will come, take x-rays and check [transport].

The head of the department noted that the checkpoints will likely be closed for trucks at the end of this year.
