The President of Kazakhstan responded to the proposal of the Belarusian dictator.
The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, “appreciated the joke” of Lukashenka, who suggested that Kazakhstan join the “union state” with Russia.
Tokayev noted that Kazakhstan does not see the need for such a union, since it is already a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which provides a high level of integration. He also stressed that Kazakhstan does not need nuclear weapons, as it has joined the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and is ready to comply with it.
“Recently, Aliaksandr Lukashenka suggested that Kazakhstan join the Union State. I appreciated his joke. I think that there is no need for this, since there are other integration associations, first of all, the Eurasian Economic Union. As for nuclear weapons, we do not need them, since we have signed the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Treaty Banning Nuclear Weapon Tests. We remain committed to our obligations under these international documents,” Tokayev said.
As the Charter97.org website wrote earlier, Tokayev called the degree of integration between Belarus and Russia and the rest of the EAEU countries a problem.
