Two factors came into play.
The self-proclaimed ruler of Belarus, Aliaksandr Lukashenka, is heavily dependent on fellow dictator Vladimir Putin. The issue of entering the war against Ukraine leads their relations.
Political scientist Taras Zagorodny comments for 24 Channel.
Taras Zagorodniy explained that about 90% of the Belarusian people adamantly oppose to bringing Belarus into the war because they do not understand why Ukrainians should be their enemies.
“It is very dangerous for Lukashenka,” the political scientist stressed.
“Secondly, the Belarusian army is under a big question. There are no contract soldiers as in Russian one, therefore, in the ranks of the Armed Forces there are guys from 18 to 20 years old who want to defend their country, and not fight for no reason. The Ukrainian military will also not feel sorry for anyone who came to their land.
The military leadership of Belarus and the Belarusian people understand that for the Russians they are expendable material, lower in status even than the Wagner PMC, and this will create a troubled situation for Lukashenka,” Taras Zagorodniy said.
In his opinion, such sentiments do not serve Lukashenka, and there may be a coup in Belarus.
Taras Zagorodniy emphasized that the Russians themselves are afraid to transfer part of the troops to the Belgorod region, where a special operation is being carried out to “liberate” the region from the dictatorship of Vladimir Putin. So, they are not sure that the fighters will not go over to the side of the Russian Volunteer Corps and the Freedom of Russia Legion.
“The same with Belarus. There are no guarantees that some new unit with its important mission will not enter its territory,” the political scientist notes.
