Behind-the-scenes negotiations have been going on for more than a month.
Several sources told Novy Chas that the topic of lifting sanctions in exchange for the release of some political prisoners could be raised at a meeting in Brussels today.
Behind-the-scenes negotiations on the lifting of sanctions in exchange for the release of prisoners, trading political prisoners, have been going on for more than a month.
It is known that from time to time there are proposals among lobbyists and those who voice their desires to lift sanctions on the export of potash fertilizers, to allow Belarusian athletes to participate in influential international competitions. This time it’s lifting sanctions from Belavia.
Several sources of the publication among the democratic opposition and in the structures of the EU report that at the next meeting in Brussels, which will begin on June 19, it is planned to discuss with EU representatives just the lifting of sanctions on aviation. Like, there are signals from the Belarusian authorities that in return they can release some of the political prisoners.
Who exactly can be released, who transmits these signals to representatives of the opposition, is not exactly known. It is also unknown why such initiatives appear with such regularity during the periods of the greatest instability of the regime of Lukashenka and his accomplices.
I would like to hope that despite the lobbyists, some interests of European businessmen and the naivety of certain groups among the Belarusian public, as well as all the attempts of the Belarusian special services, representatives of the EU and the USA will no longer make the same old mistake, as it has happened more than once.
Trading political prisoners is not only shameful, but also very harmful for the future of Belarus. It will not only conserve the existing regime in Belarus for an indefinite period, even if it is not ruled by Lukashenka, but will also deepen the split within the democratic community.
