German Foreign Minister: Putin's Arrest At BRICS Summit Is Legal
ANNALENA BAERBOCK

International law is clear.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said she considers the possible arrest of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to be legal. A warrant for this was previously issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague. This is reported by the German newspaper Zeit with a reference to the words of the Minister.

Boerbock urged respect for international law at the upcoming BRICS summit in South Africa, which Putin may attend.

“Currently, international law is clear. International law clearly states the following: war criminals responsible for waging aggressive wars will inevitably be held accountable,” Burbock said.

She spoke about this after the meeting of the Council of the Baltic Sea States in Wismar, Germany.

Baerbock said the BRICS summit made it clear that brutal war of aggression and disruption of the international order has consequences for every aggressor and war criminal.

She noted that South Africa had already made clear that it was a member of the ICC.

“It makes it even clearer that this Russian war of aggression is not a purely European affair, but affects the whole world,” she said.

South Africa is a signatory to the Rome Statute, which means it is obliged to arrest Putin if he appears on the territory of the country.
