Polish Prime Minister: PMC Wagner Mercenaries Moves Towards Suwalki Corridor

The militants may be posing as Belarusian border guards.

A group of mercenaries from the PMC Wagner has moved towards the Suwalki Corridor. This was announced by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki at a press conference in the border town of Gliwice on 29 July, reports Polsat.

The Suwalki Corridor is a hypothetical route from Belarus to the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation, running along the border between Lithuania and Poland.

"We have information that more than 100 mercenaries from the Wagner group have moved towards the Suwalki corridor and are near Hrodna in Belarus. What is the purpose of this? It is certainly a step towards another hybrid attack on Polish territory," he said.

The Polish leader suggested that the Wagner fighters could pose as Belarusian border guards and try to help illegal immigrants at the border to cross over to the Polish side. It is more likely that they themselves will pretend to be illegal migrants and intend to enter Poland, Morawiecki said.

He also noted that in the last two years Poland has been confronted with constant attacks on its border with Belarus. In 2023 alone, he said, there were 16,000 attempts to cross the border illegally.
