The Belarusian people are paying for false information.
On August 23, Belstat celebrates its professional holiday - the Day of State Statistics Workers. They chose the day because the Belarusian Soviet Military Revolutionary Committee decided to establish the Central Statistical Bureau on this day.
Today, 103 years later, state statisticians are faced with revolutionary tasks once again - how to show a beautiful picture of how the economy works, to put it mildly, not entirely favourable conditions. The solution turned out to be quite simple: some of the information from public access is simply hidden, and the other part is embellished.
For these purposes, the state statistics will receive more than BYR 88 million from the Republican budget in 2023. Thus, each resident of the country will pay about 10 rubles for these services. However, the total may be slightly lower. For example, in 2022, it was originally planned to spend BYR 73.7 million for state statistics bodies. The total amount was BYR 7.5 million lower and amounted to BYR 66.2 million.
Anyway, Belstat has been and remains the main source of information about the state of the country, regardless of the credibility of this state body. Belstat makes about 2 million reports on 36 industries annually, also Belstat published more than 5,000 reports on the social and economic situation in Belarus last year. Many of these reports are valuable and can be used in practice.
At the moment, society is being deprived of a large number of extremely important indicators - information on key exports, the state of public health, and many, many other figures. It is difficult to say when the state statistics will have to reveal this information. But much more important is that they will have to restore their reputation at the same time, and this is much more difficult.
