Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk Stages Hunger Strike

The activist of the European Belarus Civil Campaign protested against the inhuman conditions in the temporary detention centre of the Rechytsa District Police Department.

An activist of the European Belarus Civil Campaign, political prisoner Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk, went on a hunger strike, completely refusing to eat.

According to the Viasna Human Rights Center, this was a protest against the terrible conditions created by the administration of the temporary detention center of the Rechytsa District Police Department.

“After arriving at the detention center, Palina was placed in a solitary cell with a complete lack of sanitation and even insects in there. All personal things and food that she had brought with her were taken from her. She had to sleep on the crooked iron plates of the “bunk bed”, since they did not provide her with any bedding. They do not allow her walks and all kinds of parcels,” human rights activists write.

It also became known that the last investigative actions were carried out in the Rechytsa temporary detention facility in the framework of a criminal case on “malicious disobedience to the administration of the penal colony”. Next week, the case will be referred to the Prosecutor's Office, and then to the Rechytsa District Court.

In 2021, Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk was sentenced to two years in prison. In April 2022, they added her one more year in prison under Art. 411 of the Criminal Code (“Malicious disobedience to the requirements of the administration of the correctional institution”).

This term was supposed to end on August 6, but another case was brought against the activist of the European Belarus for “disobedience”. At the end of June, she was transferred to Navinki Psychiatric Care Hospital, but she refused to undergo a psychiatric examination there.

Palina Sharenda-Panasiuk was supposed to be released on August 6, but a new criminal case was opened against her and she was transferred from the Rechytsa penal colony to the detention centre #3 in Homel.
