He headed the publication for 28 years.
Editor-in-Chief of one of the oldest Belarusian independent newspapers Narodnaya Volya Iosif Siaredzich wrote on his Facebook page about his resignation from the post he had held since the founding of the publication.
“I'm leaving. It is with pain in my heart that I say these words. But life is life. In a couple of months I will be 75 years old. And like it or not, you have to say goodbye to hard daily work, and health prompts that you need to stop, and the circumstances of the time do not contribute to vigorous activity.
You, dear supporters of Narodnaya Volya, know what shameful steps certain forces took to separate us. At first they refused printing services. Recently, they canceled the registration certificate of a newspaper that for more than 10 years had not received a single warning from either the Ministry of Information, or the Presidential Administration. Without any reason, they destroyed the publication, which was a model for all Belarusian media,” wrote Iosif Siaredzich in his appeal.
“In parting, I want to say that for 28 years we, the Narodnaya Volya people, have not betrayed either our conscience, or the Free Speech, or the Motherland! Let's stay that way.”
“I am leaving Engels, 34A, where the editorial office was located for almost three decades, but I will always be with you, my supporters, all good people! Thank you, dear ones, for your sincere support, for your life-affirming voice that sounded from the pages of every issue of the independent newspaper,” he concluded.
The journalist said that he transferred the ownership rights for the website nv-online.info to another person. Now the website is closed for a couple of days due to a change in the owner of the domain.
Narodnaya Volya is a socio-political newspaper founded in 1995 by Iosif Siaredzich, former editor-in-chief of Narodnaya Gazeta. In June, the Ministry of Information deprived Narodnaya Volya of its registration certificate, and in April the newspaper stopped publishing its PDF version.
