The date is set.
Lithuania has decided on the closing date of two checkpoints on the border with Belarus. It is specified in the draft government decree prepared by the Ministry of Transport and Communications.
The closure of the points “Šumkas” (from the Belarusian side — “Losha”) and “Tverečius” (Vidzy) is planned from August 15.
Head of the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania Rustam Lyubaev said that in the first 6 months of 2023, 800,000 Belarusians arrived in Lithuania. He noted that despite the danger warned by the Department of State Security and the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, 230,000 Lithuanian citizens have visited Belarus during this time, writes Delfi.lt.
“Speaking in general about crossing the Lithuanian-Belarusian border, then in the first 6 months of this year, 2 million passengers passed through the checkpoint in both directions. If we talk specifically about the citizens of Belarus, there were 830,000 of them. Most of them went back — about the same number as entered. As for the citizens of Lithuania, 230,000 people left for Belarus in six months,” said Rustam Lyubaev.
He also said that the “Šumkas” and “Tverečius” checkpoints would be closed.
“The closure of these checkpoints will not have a very big impact on the movement of freight transport, since either empty freight vehicles or citizens pass through these border checkpoints,” Lyubaev once again noted.
