The Belarusian dictator deserves to be issued an arrest warrant
Member of the European Parliament from Lithuania, the author of a report calling for an arrest warrant for Lukashenka, Petras Auštrevičius, gave his comments for the Charter 97 website.
“The report is qualitatively a new step in assessing the situation in Belarus. I hope the European institutions will draw the necessary conclusions. To this day, I think, the European Union did some things, but not everything which comes to the proper assessment of the crimes committed by Lukashenka's regime and him personally. From the sanctions point of view, I don't think that we made all the necessary decisions regarding deterring and pushing against the Lukashenka regime.
Lukashenka is an accomplice in the war of aggression. I think it is high time to regard him as a war criminal, considering the outside aggression and domestic crimes against people and political opposition. He deserves to be issued an arrest warrant.
We, in the European Union, are in full understanding of what is going on in Belarus. We are very sorry for the political oppressions which the people of Belarus go through and for the economic suffering which people feel because of unreasonable and ungrounded Lukashenka's policies.
But at the same time, I see a very good future for our relationships and our cooperation once the democratic Belarus will be established. I see a good chance for the European perspective. That's why although I am concerned for now, I am optimistic looking at the more distant future,” said Petras Auštrevičius
