The former political prisoner was awarded while in prison.
Leanid Sudalenka was solemnly given the Homo Homini human rights award, which he was awarded back in 2021. At that time, the Homel human rights activist was in prison. Human rights activist Natallia Satsunkevich received the award for him. Yesterday in Vilnius, at a solidarity meeting of the #FreeViasna campaign, she handed over the award to her colleague.
The Homo Homini Award (Latin: "A human to another human") is a human rights award founded in 1994 by the People in Need Czech human rights organization. It is awarded to individuals who have made “significant contributions to the promotion of human rights, democracy and non-violent methods of resolving social and political conflicts.”
Recall that Leanid Sudalenka is a famous lawyer and laureate of the Charter’97 award and the Freedom Equality Brotherhood French. He was arrested on January 18, 2021 on his way to work. He was accused under Art. 342 of the Criminal Code (group actions that grossly violate public order) and were sentenced to three years in a general-security security prison.
Leanid was released and left Belarus this summer. The Homel human rights activist spoke at the European Parliament the other day: he described the detention conditions in Belarusian prisons.
