Suspect In Tupac Shakur’s Murder Arrested In US After 27 Years

Las Vegas police have detained a man suspected of involvement in the 1996 drive-by shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur, the Associated Press and The New York Post reported, citing sources.

The agency writes that this refers to former gangster Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis. NY Post sources reported that he will be charged with conspiracy to murder.

Duane ‘Keffe D’ Davis, now 60, was interviewed in 2018 for the Netflix documentary Death Row Chronicles in which he said he was in the car used to shoot Tupac at the time of the murder. He then revealed the identities of three other people who were in the car with him — Terrence Brown in the driver's seat, DeAndre Smith in the left rear seat, and Davis' nephew Orlando Anderson in the right back seat behind his uncle. Davis said that one of the people sitting in the back fired the shot, but refused to say who exactly, citing the “code of the streets.”

After the release of Davis' interview, police reopened the investigation into the murder of Tupac Shakur. In July 2023, a search was conducted at a home located in the Las Vegas suburbs in connection with this case. The police did not specify whether a suspect had been identified, but they recalled that in Nevada there is no statute of limitations for murder cases, so the investigation is ongoing.

Tupac Shakur died on September 13, 1996 from cardiac arrest. A week earlier (on the night of September 7), he was driving to a nightclub after attending a boxing match involving Mike Tyson. The car the musician was in got fired upon. The hip-hop artist was wounded. He was connected to artificial life support and put into an induced coma.

During his short career, Shakur managed to release five studio albums, and sold more than 75 million records worldwide. In 2005, MTV listed The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory as one of the “Greatest Hip-Hop Albums Ever”. The vast majority of Shakur's songs talk about the hard life in the ghetto, violence, poverty, racism and the problems of modern society.
