Car Trip Across Border Costs Belarusian Woman $35,000 Plus 12 Thousand Rubles

A 64-year-old woman, who tried to export 35 thousand dollars to Lithuania, was sentenced in Ashmiany, reported the press service of the Prosecutor General's office.

In September, the woman was travelling by car to Lithuania through the ‘Kamenny Loh’ checkpoint. In order not to declare the currency, she handed out $35 thousand to four other passengers, travelling with her in the same vehicle.

When crossing the border, Belarusian customs officers uncovered the scheme and seized the money. The woman was prosecuted under Part 2 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code (Illegal transportation of cash in large amounts across the customs border).

The court found the Belarusian guilty and imposed a fine of 300 basic units (Br12 thousand). The $35 thousand, which the defendant tried to transport to Lithuania, was confiscated.

The verdict has not entered into legal force and can be appealed.
