Several Actors Of The Republican Theater Of Belarusian Drama Are Detained

The names of at least three of them are known.

At least three actors of the Republican Theater of Belarusian Drama (RTBD) were detained. The reasons are being clarified, according to the Viasna Human Rights Center.

Human rights activists received information about the detention of a number of actors of the Republican Theater of Belarusian Drama, one of the most popular in the country.

They know the names of at least three detainees, information about other people is being clarified.

The causes and details of the incident are also being clarified.

Earlier it became known about the dismissal of Sviatlana Kariukina from the post of director of the Republican Theater of Belarusian Drama. This happened back in July of this year. There were relevant changes on the theater's website. The name and photo of Karyukina disappeared from there.

Recently, the RTBD has remained one of the most popular Belarusian groups. However, the repression did not bypass them either.

In the fall of 2020, actors Mikalai Stonka and Andrei Novik left the RTBD. The first one did this in protest against censorship. The second is "in solidarity with the strikers and the dismissed." In May 2021, Illia Yasinski left the country. In 2020, he participated in protest marches. He was detained during one of protests and his vertebrae were broken. At the end of December 2021, the artistic director of the theater, Aliaksndr Hartsueu, was dismissed. He has headed RTBD since 2012.

In March — early April 2022, four actors left or were dismissed from the theater: Alena Baiarava, Maryia Piatrovich, Maryna Zdaronkava and Maksim Shyshko. The latter was detained at an anti-war demonstration on February 27.
