EU Supporters Snatch Out Victory In Moldova's Referendum

The margin of victory was 12,243.

The data of the Moldovan CEC after counting 99.46% of the votes have confirmed that Moldovan citizens responded favourably in the constitutional referendum on accession to the EU - but with a very small margin.

This is reported by ‘European Truth’.

According to the results, the answer ‘yes’ during the referendum on introducing the European integration course in the constitution was given by 50.41 per cent of voters, while the answer ‘no’ was given by 49.59 per cent. The difference in votes between supporters and opponents was only 12,243.

Now the main law of Moldova will contain norms on its European integration.

At the same time, it is noteworthy that this positive result was ensured by the diaspora. The residents of Moldova themselves opposed the country's rapprochement with the EU.

In particular, after counting the data from 85% of polling stations, the support for the ‘yes’ answer only slightly exceeded 45%. The result shifted in favour of the European integrationists only after the data from foreign polling stations with pro-European populations started coming in.

Even in the capital Chisinau, 44 per cent of voters, almost half of the population, were against a European future. In the most pro-Russian region of Gagauzia, the negative answers were 95 per cent.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu believes that there was no fair political process at the elections and referendum in Moldova. Sandu claims that the authorities have evidence of large-scale vote buying.

The president emphasised that the ‘unprecedented attack on freedom and democracy’ lasted for several months and that criminal groups and foreign forces were behind it, which ‘attacked our country with tens of millions of euros, lies and propaganda’.

Moldova's referendum was held in conjunction with the first round of presidential elections, where Sandu won, however, the next president will be chosen in the second round.
