CNBC: Iran's Aid To Russia Has A Catch

Putin may face consequences.

Iran has demonstrated "loyalty" to its alliance with Russia since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine, but now Tehran is forced to indirectly fight Israel on two fronts, experts say.

In particular, Iran may now begin to turn to Russia for help, given the need for more powerful air defence capabilities and military intelligence to detect "an as-yet-unattached direct Israeli attack on Iran," CNBC analysts report.

It is added that Russia is well positioned to provide Tehran with such capabilities, but the extent of its assistance to the Islamic Republic remains uncertain due to the consequences of one choice or another.

Bilal Saab, a junior fellow in the Middle East and North Africa program at the Chatham House think tank, said Iran has high hopes for Russia in the context of providing military assistance.

The expert stressed that even among authoritarian countries, reputation has "enormous importance in international relations":

"So if the Russians avoid answering, it will have consequences not only for their relations with Iran, but also with any other partners, for example, with China."

Saab believes that Russia can still provide Iran with what this country needs in terms of weapons. The media writes that, nevertheless, Tehran may not get "everything it needs", since Russia is "too bogged down in Ukraine" to offer military intervention against Israel on behalf of the Iranians.

"It is too risky a game to go against the United States because of the Iranians... so I think they will most likely stay on the sidelines and try to help from as far away as possible," Saab stressed.
