NYT: China Is Unhappy With Russia-DPRK Military Alliance

North Korea's sending of troops to Ukraine would put Beijing in a difficult position.

The sending of North Korean troops to fight in Ukraine could put China in a difficult position diplomatically, The New York Times writes.

It is noted that this decision will test the “close” diplomatic relations between China and North Korea like never before.

“China has been frustrated by the instability Pyongyang has sowed in North Asia with its nuclear weapons program and periodic threats to destroy South Korea. Now North Korea is fomenting war in Europe, which could deepen a broader confrontation over a world order that pits the United States and its allies against an axis of anti-Western powers led by China and Russia,” the publication says.

It is noted that China has tried to position itself as a “force for peace” and to contrast itself with the United States, and the prospect of sending North Korean troops to fight Western-backed forces undermines that rhetoric.

According to analysts, another issue that could worry China’s leadership is the sharing of military technology between Russia and North Korea.

“This could encourage the North to act more aggressively toward South Korea or Japan, while at the same time reducing Beijing’s ability to influence the reclusive state, even though it relies on China for trade and aid,” the NYT writes.

Victor Cha, chairman of the Korea office at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, suggested that Beijing does not know how to curb North Korea’s efforts to help the Kremlin:

“China is caught between paralysis and incompetence on this issue. Although they are indirectly supporting Russia’s efforts in the war, they cannot be happy with the fate of the DPRK. There is nothing good in this for them in the short term or the long term.”

The NYT recalled that at the BRICS summit, Chinese leader Xi Jinping called on countries “not to allow the escalation of the Ukrainian conflict.”
