The UK Speaks Out About Transfer Of Materials Against Lukashenka To The Hague

London is in favor of bringing criminals to justice.

The UK is working closely with Lithuania to hold the Belarusian authorities accountable for human rights violations. This is stated in the response of the country's Foreign Ministry to a question about its support for Lithuania's transfer of materials with accusations against Alexander Lukashenko to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

A member of the British House of Lords, David Elton, asked the government “what consideration they have given to Lithuania's referral of Belarus to the International Criminal Court, and whether they support the referral”.

On October 23, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs Jenny Chapman responded to him.

“We are aware that on 30 September Lithuania referred the Belarusian authorities to the International Criminal Court. The UK Government is giving due consideration to the referral. We are working closely with Lithuania and other international partners to hold the Belarusian authorities to account for the appalling ongoing human rights crackdown in that country,” her reply states.

“We remain committed to wider accountability measures, including through funding the International Accountability Platform for Belarus which collects and preserves evidence of crimes committed by the Belarusian regime,” Chapman noted.
