Baranavichy Family Tried For ‘High Treason’

Uladzislau Kashcheyeu worked at the 61st fighter airbase, his wife Tatsiana - at the 558th aircraft repair plant. Their schoolboy son is waiting for them at home.

Uladzislau Kashcheyeu is 49 years old. He seems to be from a military family, as he graduated from the school of the Southern Group of Forces. Such schools were created for children of Soviet military men who served in Hungary.

Uladzislau worked at the 61st fighter airbase, writes ‘Viasna’. At the beginning of the war, the territory of the base was being used by the Russian military.

Tatisana Kashcheyava is 44 years old. She was born in Baranavichy. She worked at the 558th aircraft repair plant. This enterprise maintains and repairs aircraft, including those damaged during the war in Ukraine. The plant, as well as its director, is under EU and US sanctions.

The Kashcheyeus have two children: a daughter who recently turned 18 and a son who is now in high school. Judging by their social networks, together they travelled a lot in Belarus and abroad.

It seems that they were detained last autumn - that's when they stopped being active on social networks.

The trial of Uladzislau and Tatsiana started in Brest City Court on October 24. They are accused of ‘treason against the state’ (part 1 and part 2 of Article 356 of the Criminal Code). The spouses face up to twenty-five years in colony. The essence of the charges, as in most such cases now, is unknown, as even the lawyer is forbidden to tell about it.

The couple is being tried by Dzmitry Karasinski, a former Stolin district judge. He sentenced the illustrator Natallia Levaya to six years in colony, and also posthumously tried Aliaksandr Kulinich, who died in the colony.
