Deputy Who Kept Slaves Arrested In Russia

The slave owner lived in the Vladimir region.

The law-enforcement agencies detained a deputy of the Sobinsky municipal district of the Vladimir region of the Russian Federation in a case of fraud on an especially large scale and the use of slave labor, the press service of the regional department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation reported.

“From February 2022 to October 2024, the suspects illegally detained three men on the territory of a car wash belonging to the deputy, using their slave labor. Using violence against the victims, the members of the organized group forced them to perform labor duties and assignments for free at any time of the day,” the report says.

The press service noted that the deputy, together with other members of the criminal group, stole more than a million rubles from the bank account of the victim, a participant in the war in Ukraine.

All defendants have been charged under Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (fraud committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy, on an especially large scale) and Part 3 of Article 127.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (use of slave labor against two or more persons with the use of violence or the threat of its use, committed by an organized group). They face up to 20 years in prison.

“Investigators questioned the victims and witnesses, inspected the scene of the incident, and searched the suspects’ residences, during which weapons, cash, bank cards, and computer equipment were seized, and the necessary forensic examinations were ordered,” the department’s press service added.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation emphasized that the court placed two detainees in custody, while the issue of choosing a restraint for the third person is being decided. A range of investigative measures is being carried out and all episodes of the criminal group’s activities are being established.

Over the past month, two farms with slaves have already been found in Russia.
