The US Preparing To Jam Russian Satellites In Case Of Conflict

Details.

The Meadowlands system, designed to suppress Russian and Chinese satellites in the early stages of a conflict, will enter service with the US in 2025, Bloomberg reports, citing the US Space Force Command. Its delivery was initially planned for two years earlier, but was postponed to eliminate discovered deficiencies.

The system successfully passed all required tests in September. In the first quarter of 2025, the military will decide when the first five of the planned 32 systems will be ready for use.

Meadowlands, created by L3Harris Technologies Inc., is a lightweight mobile version of the “counter-communication system” launched in 2020. The new version can operate on more frequencies and support software updates. It was originally planned to be delivered in October 2022, but due to undisclosed technical difficulties, the deadline was reconsidered.

In June, U.S. Space Commander Stephen Whiting said Russia had launched a satellite called Cosmos 2576 that could pose a threat to U.S. national security assets. The satellite was launched on May 16 and has since moved into a plane aligned with a U.S. satellite, allowing it to spy on and potentially interfere with its operations. Cosmos 2576 is described by the Pentagon as “an anti-space weapon that could potentially attack other satellites in low Earth orbit.”

Russia tested similar weapons in 2017, 2019, and 2022, “and now it appears they have put one into orbit in working order,” Whiting said. The U.S. takes such activity seriously and is practicing responses to potential attacks on its spacecraft, he warned.

In February, US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told CNN that Moscow was developing a weapon capable of hitting commercial and government satellites in low orbit by creating a powerful electromagnetic wave when a nuclear charge detonates.
