Pro-Russian Party Fails In Bulgarian Elections

Pro-Western center-right coalition takes the lead.

In the early parliamentary elections in Bulgaria held on October 27, the pro-Russian and nationalist Eurosceptic party Revival suffered a setback, taking only third place with 14% of the votes with 82% of the ballots counted, The Moscow Times writes.

The leader was the pro-Western center-right coalition, uniting the parties Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) and the Union of Democratic Forces (SDS), which received over 26% of the votes. In second place was the alliance of the Continue Change party and the Democratic Bulgaria coalition (PP-DB), which received about 15% of the votes.

The new composition of the National Assembly included seven political associations, two more are continuing to fight to overcome the electoral threshold. Former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, the leader of GERB, called the victory of his coalition “indisputable” and assured that he would make every effort to form a government. He also stressed that he was ready to compromise with most political forces, with the exception of the pro-Russian Revival Party.

The previous elections, held in the summer, brought the greatest support to GERB, but it was unable to form a stable government. In August, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev appointed a new technical cabinet, headed by former GERB member and now non-party Dimitar Glavchev.
