Nina Bahinskaya Walks Around Minsk With Protest Poster
NINA BAHINSKAYA

This happened on October 19.

Well-known public activist Nina Bahinskaya may soon appear before the Savetski District Court of Minsk, Belsat reports citing its own sources. Bahinskaya held her action on the evening of October 19 on Kazlou Street. It was on that day 36 years ago that the organizing committee of the Belarusian Popular Front was created at a meeting of the “Martyrolog”.

Bahinskaya intended to reach the building on the first floor of which the BPF Party Administration, the largest party of the late 1980s and early 2000s, was located for several years in a row. The activist wanted to remind society that it was with the Belarusian Popular Front that the modern opposition movement in Belarus began.

The police detained Nina Bahinskaya on the corner of Independence Avenue and Kazlou Street. The activist was taken to the Savetski District Department of Internal Affairs. There, a police officer handcuffed her, with her arms behind her back, like a dangerous criminal. Nina Bahinskaya has shoulder problems and she asked that if the police officers saw such a need, they at least give her the opportunity to hold her hands in front. But they ignored the woman's age and her physical condition. Bahinskaya refused to read and sign the protocol. She was held in handcuffs at the department for almost three hours and was released until the trial only at about 10:00 pm. The court date is still unknown. Most likely, Nina Bahinskaya will be punished with another fine. The activist has been participating in opposition rallies since 1988 with a large national flag. She herself has become one of the symbols of peaceful protests in Belarus. She has been fined so many times that the amount of fines exceeds $20,000. Last year and this year, Bahinskaya was detained several times for national symbols and punished with fines. The fines are being withheld from her pension, but to speed up the payment process, her dacha with a plot of land was sold. Another small dacha was put up for sale. Nina Bahinskaya is prohibited from using mobile phone services. There is also a list of prohibitions that make the activist smile: visiting casinos, operating yachts and motorboats, and hunting.
