The head of the Baltic country's federation said that “values are more important than sports”.
The Lithuanian Beach Soccer Team refused to play with the Belarusian team in the playoffs of the World Cup qualifiers in this discipline, which is taking place in Spain.
The decision was made by the Lithuanian Football Federation together with the team. As reported by the LFF, the Lithuanian footballers advanced to the next stage of the competition from third place in the groups. The playoff draw was held on Tuesday, according to the results of which the Lithuanian team was to play with our country's team on Wednesday.
“It is disappointing that our beach soccer players will not be able to compete for the next round of qualifiers and test their strength against the elite of sports, but in this case, values remain above sports. We discussed this decision with representatives of the team and agreed that such a step on our part will once again properly demonstrate our position on this issue,” said Edgaras Stankevičius, President of the Lithuanian Football Federation.
