The scandal is growing.
A high-profile scandal continues to flare up in Russia over the ban on the Discord platform, popular among gamers and programmers.
The Russian authorities' decisions have outraged military Z-bloggers, who claim that it is being used by drone operators on the front lines of the war with Ukraine. Bloomberg writes about this.
The outrage arose after the Russian Internet regulator added Discord to a growing list of social networks on which restrictions have been imposed on Tuesday.
This is explained by fears that the application is being used to recruit people to commit terrorist attacks and sell drugs.
However, the real reason is the platform's ability to bypass YouTube's blocking in Russia. Other social media platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, have already been blocked by the Russian authorities since the beginning of the war, limiting the ability to receive information from sources independent of the Kremlin.
Fighterbomber, a Telegram channel dedicated to military aviation with more than 530,000 subscribers, called it a “stab in the back.”
Russian officials are out of touch with “reality, the people, and, unfortunately, the army,” the channel wrote in a blog post on Wednesday. The Discord ban means some command centers may be left without drone feeds, according to the Rybar channel, which has ties to the Russian Defense Ministry and more than 1.3 million subscribers.
“The Defense Ministry is not seeking to provide troops with any alternative,” the channel said.
Discord, which the company says has more than 200 million monthly active users, faces growing scrutiny around the world as regulators seek to impose stricter controls on digital platforms.
